Renewable energy accounts for 30% of the world's total electricity production in 2023
According to a report by Ember - a climate research organization based in London (UK), by 2023, with the rapid increase of wind and solar energy, renewable energy will account for 30% of the total world electricity output.
According to Ember's Global Electricity Overview report, renewable energy sources provided 30,3% of global electricity in 2023, up from 29,4% in 2022 due to an increase in projects. .
Among them, solar energy continues to be the fastest growing renewable energy source with output doubling that of coal. China, the European Union, the US and Brazil are the leading countries in solar power installations. Specifically, more than 50% of the solar power facilities added globally came from China, with total global solar power output increasing by 23,2%.
Besides solar energy, wind energy also has significant development. China continues to be the leader in this field with 60% of new wind power production globally.
Despite the strong development of clean energy, coal is still the main source of electricity worldwide. China, India and Mexico are the countries that accounted for the majority of the increase in electricity produced from coal over the past year.
This raises serious concerns about climate change. Scientists warn that burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases, contributing to increased global temperatures, creating a major challenge for efforts to protect the environment and combat climate change.
Ember's report found that some countries have been burning coal to compensate for hydropower shortages caused by drought. This is a dangerous vicious cycle, demonstrating the need for urgent action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Although many challenges remain, analysts predict renewable energy will continue to grow strongly in the coming years. It is expected that by 2024, renewable energy production will grow faster, leading to a 2% reduction in electricity produced from fossil fuels.
