Electric cars are 'king' in the next 10 years, traditional cars are about to expire?

A study published earlier this week predicts that electric cars will dominate the auto market in the next 10 years thanks to their advantages of being cheaper, energy efficient and more environmentally friendly than traditional cars.

In a research report published on May 10, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) and the NGO Transport and Environment predicted that by 5 all cars sold in Europe will be electric cars. With supportive policies from governments and rapid technological advancement, the above scenario may become reality sooner than expected.

Not just a family car

In the future, electric cars will no longer be understood in a narrow sense, including only sedans or SUVs that carry a small number of people. Some countries have begun researching electric buses, even small and large electric trucks. Within the next 5-10 years, the first electric trucks will begin to roll, carrying more goods and traveling longer distances than vehicles using gasoline or diesel engines.

According to BNEF research, by 2026 electric sedans and SUVs will be as cheap as internal combustion engine cars. Small electric trucks will be even faster and cheaper than gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2025. BNEF forecasts show that by 2030, all electric cars will be cheaper than conventional cars without any regulation. subsidized books.

BNEF's survey in the European market shows that the current price of a mid-range electric car is about 33.000 euros, nearly double the price of a gasoline car of the same size. By 2026, electric and gasoline cars will have the same price of around 19.000 euros. In 2030, the pre-tax price of an electric car will be about 16.300 euros, lower than the 19.900 euros of a gasoline car.

One of the reasons promoting the production of electric cars is new environmental protection policies. The era of electric cars will likely begin in Europe, where automakers are aggressively converting production lines to electric car models and hybrid "hybrid" cars (ie cars that can run on gasoline). and electricity) to meet the emission requirement of 95gr CO2/km if you do not want to be heavily fined.

Electric cars will account for 50% of new cars sold in Europe by 2030 and 85% by 2035, if the above policies remain the same. This number could reach 100% by 2035 "if lawmakers tighten measures to reduce emissions and strengthen market stimulation policies, such as widespread deployment of charging stations for electric cars", according to Transport and Environment.

Technology – the shortcut key

One of the issues that still makes users hesitant about electric cars is the cost of the battery and its durability. Due to the current high cost of battery production (accounting for 1/4 to 2/5 of the cost), electric cars are still inferior to traditional cars.

"If each charge can run over 320km and the charging network is good, it is a no-brainer that people will rush to buy electric cars" - Professor David Bailey of the University of Birmingham (UK) told The Guardian newspaper.

According to BNEF research, battery prices will decrease by up to 58% between 2020 and 2030, falling to about 58 USD per kWh (battery capacity measurement unit). Current electric car batteries have an average capacity of 35 to 100kWh at a price of $137 per kWh, according to a 2020 Bloomberg survey.

The price of batteries falling below 100 USD per kWh will be a "historic" turning point for electric cars, marking the end of internal combustion engine vehicles and hybrid vehicles.

Many technologies are being researched to increase battery life and extend usage time after each charge. At Cornell University (USA), a research team has been pursuing a wireless charging project for electric cars for the past 7 years and is reaping positive signals.

Associate Professor Khurram Afridi, one of the project participants, aims to integrate a wireless charging system into a highway that will have a special toll lane, like a lane for those who want to run at high speeds. . “If your car is driving on the highway and the battery is low, you can turn into this special lane and charge the battery while driving. The monitoring system will record your vehicle and send a charging invoice later” – Mr. Afridi stated the scenario.”

According to Insider, if there are no obstacles, Mr. Afridi's project will be deployed on major US highways in the next 5-10 years, gradually ending the worry of running out of battery along the way or not being able to find the station. charger for electric car users.

The success of electric car company Tesla (USA) is encouraging Chinese companies to enter the electric car market. According to Bloomberg, China's major technology corporations are pouring tens of billions of dollars into electric cars. Evergrande - a Chinese real estate development corporation, also jumped into the electric car segment and raised more than 87 billion USD from investors, showing that electric car production is becoming a "hot" industry in China. Many car manufacturers in Vietnam have accelerated investment in charging stations

Automobile companies admit that switching to electric cars instead of gasoline/diesel cars is an inevitable trend and is becoming more and more clearly shaped in Vietnam.

According to the Vietnam Register, although the current number of electric vehicles is not much, it is likely to explode in the next few years.

According to this agency's statistics, in 2019 there were about 240 electric vehicles imported into Vietnam, in 2020 more than 400 vehicles, and in 2020 nearly 600 vehicles.

Along with that, currently car manufacturers, especially domestic enterprises, are also accelerating investment in electric vehicle production, installing charging stations... to transform from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles.

For example, in addition to launching electric cars and electric motorbikes, VinFast Company also cooperates with gasoline retail companies and some large cities to develop charging station systems in parking lots. convenience stores, apartment complexes, schools, dormitories, gas stations... Customers only need 15 to 30 minutes to fully charge the car's battery.

For luxury car companies like Porsche (Germany), before importing the Taycan electric car into Vietnam, the company built 2 fast charging stations (80% battery charge in 22,5 minutes) in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

Previously, Mitsubishi Vietnam also invested in a number of charging stations in Da Nang, Hoi An, Hanoi... Recently, Aeon Le Chan Commercial Center in Hai Phong invested in charging stations for electric cars, which can travel longer distances. 100km distance after just 25 minutes of charging.

Talking to Tuoi Tre, Associate Professor, Dr. Dam Hoang Phuc - Institute of Mechanics, Hanoi University of Science and Technology - said that Vietnam needs to quickly catch up with the growing electric vehicle trend in the world.

"To do this, there needs to be supportive policies to stimulate "priming" for businesses to participate in production. If we don't start implementing it now, we don't know when there will be electric cars running in Vietnam" - Mr. Phuc said.
