The largest solar power farm in Southeast Asia has been put into operation in Ninh Thuan province, Central Vietnam
Trung Nam - Thuan Nam Solar Power Plant with a capacity of 450 megawatts, spread over an area of nearly 560 hectares in Thuan Nam district, went into operation on Monday evening, 102 days since construction began in mid-month Year
Built by Ho Chi Minh City-based energy company Trungnam Group at a cost of 12 trillion VND ($518 million), the plant can produce more than one billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year and has 17 km long transmission line to connect to the power grid.
This is the first time a private company has been allowed to install power transmission lines, a previously separate field of the state-owned Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN).
Installing power transmission lines has become an important task as the growing number of renewable energy plants is overloading existing transmission lines.
Trungnam Company has added a total capacity of 1.064 megawatts to the national grid, which includes hydropower, solar power and wind power. The company plans to reach nearly 10.000 MW of renewable energy output by 2027.
The country currently has more than 100 solar power plants in operation with a total capacity of more than 6.300 MWp.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is currently drafting a national electricity plan for the next decade with the addition of 80 GW of power generation capacity, of which 37,5% will come from wind and solar power.
Vietnam needs more than $133 billion over the next decade to build new power plants and expand the power grid to fully meet rising electricity demand.
