Amazon invests over $1 billion to electrify and decarbonize its European shipping network

Amazon just announced plans to invest more 1 billion USD to electrify and decarbonize Europe's transport network in the coming years. The plan includes ordering More than 200 heavy duty electric trucks eActros 600 words Mercedes-Benz Trucks, marking Amazon's largest electric van order ever.

Committed to the Climate Pledge

Amazon said the order was part of a Climate Pledge, with the aim of achieving NetZero by 2040. To make this happen, Amazon has rolled out a number of initiatives, including:

  • Increase fleet efficiency.
  • Expand the use of low-carbon fuels.
  • Development of electric vehicles and alternative fuel vehicles.

Deploying electric vehicles on long routes

The new electric vans will be used in the UK and Germany on long-haul routes in Amazon’s “middle-mile” network, transporting goods between fulfillment centers, sortation centers and delivery stations. When fully operational, the fleet is expected to deliver over 350 million packages per year, completely zero emissions.

Efforts to electrify the entire fleet

Currently, Amazon and its delivery partners have deployed more than 3.000 electric trucks in Europe, and this number is expected to increase. more than 10.000 units by the end of 2025.
In the US, Amazon has deployed 50 electric heavy-duty trucks in California and another 38 in Europe by the end of 2024.

Supporting infrastructure

To ensure the fleet operates efficiently, Amazon will install high-power charging stations. 360kW, capable of charging from 20% to 80% in just over an hour. Building a charging network for heavy-duty long-haul vehicles is an important step to promoting electric trucks in Europe.

Diversify green transport forms

In addition to electric vans, Amazon has also started using electric rail network in the UK to deliver large-scale goods, and trialled hand deliveries in London, where staff used trolleys supplied from mobile vans.

“This is Amazon’s largest electric heavy-duty truck order worldwide and is a major step toward achieving our Net Zero commitment by 2040.”

“We are delighted that Amazon – a pioneer in the transition to alternative energy vehicles – has selected the eActros 600, a groundbreaking vehicle for sustainable transportation.”
