Today (July 3), the LEGO Group announced the launch of a new Supplier Sustainability Program, aimed at strengthening cooperation with suppliers to achieve climate change goals. climate, and sets out a new set of actions and requirements for suppliers, including setting and reporting on emissions reduction targets.
According to the company, this new program is an important part of the LEGO Group's climate action plan. The company announced a series of climate-related commitments last year, including a pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 0 and an immediate goal of reducing emissions by 2050% by 37.
Scope 3 (or value chain) emissions make up the majority of the company's total emissions, with more than 99% of the LEGO Group's carbon emissions coming from external activities, primarily from manufacturers. provides and distributes raw materials, machinery, products and services related to the group's products.
However, emissions in this value chain are often the most difficult to address. For example, the LEGO Group announced last year that it had abandoned plans to make bricks (pieces) from rPET plastic from recycled bottles, one of its key projects aimed at eliminating plastic as a from fossils and reduce carbon emissions.
The LEGO Group announced earlier this year that it will begin tying a bonus to emissions reduction targets for all salaried employees starting this year using a new KPI that measures the amount of emissions- carbon from its factories, stores and offices, as well as Scope 3 business travel emissions, which aims to expand the KPI to accommodate more Scope 3 emissions reductions. .
The company said the new program is being rolled out “to recognize the important role that suppliers play in helping to achieve group goals”.
Annette Stube, Director of Sustainability at the LEGO Group, said:
“Simply put, a net-zero world would be simple but unachievable unless we find solutions that are better than our own operations. We won't be able to achieve our sustainability goals alone – we must partner with our suppliers. We want children to inherit a healthy planet and we don't have any more time to waste.”
Key actions under the new program include requiring reporting on the carbon footprint of products and services purchased by the LEGO Group, with annual reporting starting in 2024. The company will also require require suppliers to provide short-term goals that demonstrate emissions reductions associated with the production of purchased products in 2026 and then 2028. Additionally, the program will include Collaborate to identify and develop actions for suppliers to take to meet the LEGO Group's emissions reduction targets, in areas including improving facility efficiency, moving to renewable energy sources, and finding lower-carbon solutions for transporting materials.
The company added that it will share knowledge with suppliers to help them achieve their targets, initially focusing on carbon accounting, and will have a team of experts on development sustainability that suppliers can connect to when required.
Carsten Rasmussen, CEO of the LEGO Group said:
“Sustainability is our license to operate and a requirement in the way we do business, including how we select our suppliers. We have ideas and a roadmap, but we cannot do it alone. We need all of our great partners to help us achieve our sustainability goals. Our supplier sustainability program is founded on collaboration, and we cannot underestimate the power of acting together to create real, lasting change and a sustainable future. than."
