Ho Chi Minh City government promotes the development of intelligent transportation systems
The Ho Chi Minh City government has announced plans to develop an intelligent transportation system (ITS) to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety in Vietnam. The city is using technology to manage traffic more effectively, with initiatives such as automated weighing stations, image-based penalty systems, and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered traffic regulation.

In the first half of 2024, the city's Department of Transport detected more than 1.700 traffic violations and collected fines of more than $900.000. In particular, the deployment of automatic weighing stations has helped reduce the number of vehicle weight violations by 91%. Ho Chi Minh City is also implementing digital transformation and applying AI to improve traffic management and transportation system operations. With more than 1.000 traffic surveillance cameras, of which more than 200 are capable of automatic control, the city is moving towards building a smarter and more sustainable transportation ecosystem.

However, challenges remain, such as integrating technology systems and building a common database to improve coordination between agencies. The city’s metro line, scheduled to open in December 12, is part of an overall effort to improve urban mobility.
