EU invests $439 million in alternative fuel infrastructure project to reduce transport emissions

The European Commission has just announced its allocation plan. 422 million EUR (equivalent to 439 million USD) for 39 alternative fuel infrastructure projects, to support the transition to cleaner transport systems.
Selected projects focus on areas such as:
✔ Install public charging stations for both heavy duty and light duty trucks
✔ Hydrogen fueling station development and power supply systems at seaports
✔ Airport electrification and provide marine fuels such as ammonia , and methanol
This new investment will be funded through EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) – a financial instrument to support the deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure. This is also part of AFIF’s initiative to Emission Reduction in the Trans-European Transport System (TEN-T).
AFIF funding contributes to supporting the goals of EU Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Implementation Regulation (AFIR), request dramatically increase the number of electric charging and hydrogen refueling stations on major European transport routes. The aim of this regulation is to promote zero emission vehicles, while addressing consumer concerns about fueling – a factor that could slow the transition.
🔹 According to the European Commission, the selected projects will support:
🚗 2.500 charging points for light vehicles
🚚 2.400 charging points for heavy duty trucks
(I.e. 35 hydrogen refueling stations for cars, trucks and buses
✈ Electrification of 8 airports
⚓ Greening 9 seaports
💠 2 ammonia and methanol fueling facilities
Tzitzikostas Apostles, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, said:
“The 39 projects supported this time will accelerate the deployment of charging and refueling infrastructure needed for our growing zero-emission vehicle fleet. These projects will add nearly 5.000 new charging points, including 626 high-capacity charging stations, making it easier for people to choose zero-emission vehicles and help protect the environment.” 🌍💚
