GRI Releases Draft Sustainability Reporting Standards for the Textile & Fashion Industry

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has just released a draft sustainability reporting standard specifically for the textile, footwear and jewelry industries, aiming to address the unique environmental and social impacts of the industries.

Why is this industry prioritized?

  • Complex, fragmented supply chains with high human rights risks

  • Significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions

  • Widespread impact on workers in producing countries

18 key topics to report on include:
✔ Climate change
✔ Use toxic chemicals
✔ Wastewater management
✔ Circular economy
✔ Child labor & forced labor
✔ Labor safety
✔ Supply chain transparency

Development process:

  • Working group of 21 members from businesses, social organizations, and trade unions

  • Public comment period until September 28, 9

  • Expected to be officially applied in Q2/2026

Statement from GRI leadership:
"The textile industry needs to improve accountability for its social and environmental impacts. The new standard will help businesses report more transparently" - Mr. Peter Dawkins, GRI Senior Manager emphasized.

  • Reviewing sustainability aspects in the supply chain

  • Preparing data collection system according to 18 new topics

  • Participate in commenting on the draft before September 9

This standard will complement GRI's existing industry standards covering oil and gas, agriculture and mining.
