Meta secures nearly 800 MW of renewable energy to operate data centers in the US

On June 27, 6, Meta – the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – and clean energy developer Invenergy announced a series of new agreements, according to which Meta will be provided with nearly 800 megawatts (MW) renewable energy from new wind and solar projects in the US to power its operations and expand its data centers.

Four new projects, nearly 800 MW capacity

According to the agreement, electricity from four new projects in Ohio, Arkansas and Texas will add 791 MW clean electricity into local grids. Meta will receive the renewable energy certificates (RECs) corresponding to this amount of electricity.

Specifically:

  • Two solar power centers in Ohio and one at Arkansas will go into commercial operation in year 2027.

  • Wind power center at Texas expected completion date year 2028.

Strong partnership

This is the next step in the clean energy cooperation chain between Meta and Invenergy. Previously, at the end of 2024, the two sides also signed a supply agreement. 760 MW. With new transactions, Meta's total renewable energy capacity secured from Invenergy has reached 1.800 MW.

Net Zero Commitment and AI's Energy Demands

Meta target Emission neutrality across the value chain by 2030, and has achieved the goal of operating entirely by 100% renewable energy from 2020. The company also said that by the end of 2025, it expects to adding 9,8 GW of renewable energy to the US grid.
