3. Method of generating wind power

3.1. Installation of wind turbines

A wind turbine is understood as a machine that converts the kinetic energy generated from the wind blades into mechanical energy. The way a wind turbine works is extremely simple: The wind rotates 2-3 blades mounted on the rotor. The rotor is directly connected to the main shaft, driving the generator to rotate, thereby creating renewable wind energy. Currently, there are two popular types of wind turbines including horizontal axis turbines (traditional design, can operate effectively in stable wind direction conditions) and vertical axis turbines (advanced technology, capable of operating well in all conditions, thereby helping to bring stable performance).

Wind power plants are considered one of the current types of turbines, however, its advantage is that it does not cause any noise. This is considered an ideal solution for installing wind turbines in densely populated urban areas such as gardens, parks, and public areas. 3.3. Wind power control

Computers with integrated GPS positioning systems and modern sensors will help control the wind-powered kite to automatically take off and fly in a circular orbit around a fixed station. When flying, the wind will rotate the 8 blades mounted on the kite, thereby activating the integrated generator. The generated electrical energy is transmitted to the local grid through a mooring system, thereby ensuring the supply of clean and efficient energy.

4.1. Advantages of wind power

  • Sustainable renewable energy source: Being exploited from a natural phenomenon, wind energy is created continuously and infinitely. While solar energy can only be exploited during the day when provided with light, wind power can operate both day and night to produce abundant electricity. 
  • Environmentally friendly: While fossil fuels need to be burned to produce electricity, wind power does not need to be burned at all, so it does not emit CO2 that pollutes the environment.
  • Reducing dependence on fossil fuels: Using renewable energy such as wind power will help reduce dependence on non-renewable energy sources produced from fossil fuels, thereby helping to protect the environment and ensure national energy security.

4.2. Disadvantages of wind power

  • Depending on weather conditions: The performance of a wind power plant will depend entirely on the wind speed. If the wind force is too weak, or even not blowing at all, the wind power system will significantly reduce its output, thereby disrupting the energy supply. 
  • Operating noise: Wind turbines can generate sounds up to 50 - 60 dB, which is a sound level that humans can clearly hear. When many turbines are operating at the same time, the resonance sound can cause discomfort to people living around the installation area. 
  • Ecosystem Impacts: Wind farm construction can alter the natural habitats of many wildlife. Birds in particular are at risk of collision with turbine blades, causing losses in numbers and safety.
  • Large space requirements: Wind power systems require large areas for installation and operation, and require locations with strong and stable wind speeds. This makes choosing the right location a significant challenge.
  • High investment costs: Deploying wind power systems requires large initial investments to build turbines and related infrastructure, putting financial pressure on investors.

5. Strong potential for wind power development in Vietnam

In many statistical reports, Vietnam is one of the countries that is most highly rated in developing wind power in Southeast Asia because our country is favored by nature with a coastline of up to 3200km and many regions with mountainous terrain, thereby creating favorable conditions for building wind turbines both on land and offshore.

However, compared to such strong development potential, the wind power industry in our country is still not really outstanding. The reason is probably due to the relatively high investment cost in the wind power exploitation system, estimated at about 50 million/1kw, while the policies on wind power trading are still not really clear and stable. This has unintentionally created a barrier for investors who want to invest in the wind power market in Vietnam. 

In addition, the current data related to wind power is still not really accurate and reliable. This is the cause of difficulties in the initial assessment of wind power projects, easily leading to errors in the investment scale estimation stage, thereby affecting the effectiveness of project implementation.

Therefore, to fully exploit the wind power potential in Vietnam, agencies and sectors need to develop appropriate mechanisms and policies to attract investors. At the same time, upgrading and expanding the power grid is necessary to ensure the ability to transmit wind power effectively, avoiding putting pressure on the existing system.
