United Airlines just announced an investment in JetZero, a startup developing a new line of aircraft based on the design Blended Wing Body (BWB), is expected to help save up to 50% fuel compared to current aircraft models.
This investment comes with a conditional purchase agreement, allowing United to place a maximum purchase 100 planes, if JetZero hits key technical milestones, including flight testing of a full-scale aircraft model by 2027. Additionally, United also has Option to order 100 more.
✈️ About JetZero
Establish: 2021, in California
Unique design: Integrating the wing and body into one seamless piece, helping to reduce aerodynamic drag
Effective: reduce fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs
Friendly to existing airport infrastructure and compatible with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
Passenger experience: More cabin space, larger seats and clearer aisles
🔧 Cooperation with the US Department of Defense
In 2023, JetZero signed a contract worth $235 million with the US Air Force, to accelerate the development of a full-scale prototype. The contract will help demonstrate the fuel efficiency and emissions reductions of the new airframe technology, while expanding options for both defense and civil aviation.
In recent months, JetZero has also announced that it has received investments from major airlines such as Delta , and Alaska Airlines.
💬 Statement from JetZero and United leaders
Tom O'Leary, CEO and co-founder of JetZero, shares:
“United’s investment is a clear signal that the airline industry needs disruptive technologies to sustainably meet global growth. Wing-to-body design is key to overcoming barriers to efficiency, cost and customer experience.”
Andrew Chang, Director of United Airlines Ventures (UAV) Venture Capital Fund, said:
“UAV was founded to support a strategy of finding innovative technologies that enhance the flying experience and reduce the carbon footprint. JetZero is the epitome of that philosophy.”
🌱 United's Net Zero target
United Airlines has set a goal reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 0 mà not relying on carbon offset mechanism. The investment in JetZero is part of this long-term growth strategy, through UAV – an investment fund focused on future aviation technology.
