The first 500 tons of low-emission rice from the one million hectare high-quality rice program in the Mekong Delta were exported to Japan.
The rice, branded “Green Vietnamese Rice with Low Emissions” by a company in Can Tho, was exported on the afternoon of June 5. The export price per ton of this type of rice is about 6 USD, more than double the current price of 820% broken rice in Vietnam.
According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam, the successful export of low-emission rice is the result of the process of shifting production to sustainable development and efficient use of land. This helps increase the value of Vietnamese rice.
Currently, there are 7 enterprises that have been granted the Certificate of Right to Use the Low-Emission Green Vietnamese Rice Brand, under the program of one million hectares of high-quality rice, with an output of more than 19.000 tons this year.

The Project on Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality and Low-Emission Rice Associated with Green Growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030 was approved by the Prime Minister in late 2023. The project aims to sustainably develop Vietnam's rice industry and increase farmers' income, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to the implementation of international commitments.
To date, the program has implemented 7 pilot models in 5 localities, including Kien Giang, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Dong Thap and Can Tho. According to initial results, this model helps reduce rice production costs by 8,2-24,2% thanks to saving 30-50% of seeds, 30-70 kg of fertilizer per hectare, reducing 1-4 times of spraying pesticides and 30-40% of irrigation water.

The low-emission rice farming model also helps increase productivity by 2,4-7%. Farmers' income increases by 12-50%, equivalent to an additional profit of 4-7,6 million VND per hectare compared to traditional farming.
According to statistics, this specialized model contributes to reducing an average of 2-12 tons of CO2 equivalent per hectare. The entire harvested rice output is committed to be purchased by businesses, with a price 200-300 VND higher per kg.
To date, 12 provinces and cities in the project area have registered to participate with a total area of over one million hectares. Currently, the Mekong Delta produces 24-25 million tons of rice each year, accounting for over 50% of the country's rice output and over 90% of its rice exports.
