Apple joined hands with a Chinese company to build a battery factory for electric vehicles

Giant Apple is negotiating with two Chinese companies about building a battery factory for electric cars in the US. The company's goal is that by 2024 there will be a self-driving car carrying people under the "Apple" brand.

Reuters news agency on June 8 confirmed that Apple joining hands with China's CATL and BYD was exclusive information revealed by four sources with knowledge of the issue.

Currently, negotiations are only in the early stages, in which Apple sets a condition that suppliers must build a battery factory for electric cars in the US.

Two well-informed sources revealed that CATL is quite reluctant to face this condition because US-China tensions still show no signs of cooling down.

Mr. Jared Bernstein, White House economic advisor, confirmed that Apple had set the above conditions. “This is completely consistent with what President Joe Biden said about the supply chain, about the areas where the US can gain global market share,” Mr. Bernstein stated to Reuters.

It is still unclear whether Apple is negotiating with other suppliers. CATL is a major supplier to corporations in the auto industry, including Apple's potential rival Tesla.

CATL is the world's largest car battery manufacturer, while BYD holds fourth place, according to Reuters.

Apple has not yet announced any details about its electric car production plans, but according to Reuters sources, "Apple" - Apple's nickname - wants to use lithium iron phosphate batteries because they are cheaper than nickel batteries and cobalt.

Apple's condition that suppliers build factories in the US is said to be aimed at taking advantage of the Biden administration's incentive plan.

The current US president has set out a plan to improve US infrastructure worth $1,7 trillion, including $174 billion for electric vehicle and battery manufacturers.

Many battery manufacturers are focusing resources to meet the skyrocketing demand for electric vehicles worldwide. Due to new strict emissions regulations for vehicles using internal combustion engines, many people have switched to electric vehicles.

According to a report published earlier this month, Chinese battery manufacturers are expected to continue to dominate the top position thanks to the continuously expanding domestic market.
