Strengthening control of motorcycle emissions

Strengthening control of motorcycle emissions

Motorbikes in Vietnam currently emit up to 80-90% CO, HC gas , and 50% NOx in total emissions from motor vehicles, causing serious pollution and directly affecting public health. With about 74 million motorbikes circulated nationwide, including 56 million vehicles over 5 years old, emission control is urgent request.

New regulations on motorcycle emission testing
According to Circular 47 of the Ministry of Transport:

  • Vehicles under 5 years old: exempt from inspection.
  • Vehicles 5-12 years old: Inspected every 2 years.
  • Vehicles over 12 years old: annual inspection.

Estimated inspection costs only 50.000 VND/time – not large, but effective in reducing harmful emissions and supporting vehicle maintenance.

Ideas for implementation in big cities
Some experts suggest implemented in major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City - where there is a large number of motorbikes participating in traffic. However, many opinions say that it should be implemented nationwide to avoid the situation of vehicles moving from one locality to another without being controlled.

Supporting people and moving towards green transportation

  • Repair and conversion support: Especially for people using old cars, low-income workers.
  • Investing in public transport: Promote the development of green vehicles such as electric buses, reducing dependence on private vehicles.

Motorcycle emission testing is not only an environmental protection solution, but also contributes to the strategy national green transformation, ensuring more sustainable public health and air quality.
