Super yacht concept covered with solar cells

Designers revealed the idea of a 130 m long yacht called Solar Express covered with nearly 1.500 m2 of solar cells.

Concept super yacht Solar Express.

As announced by designer Anthony Glasson at M51 studio in Hong Kong, Solar Express is inspired by the steam trains that appeared in the 2004 movie The Polar Express. In addition, it has a raised pointed part. The tip of the boat's bow resembles a narwhal's tusk.

This futuristic superyacht will be up to 130 meters long, longer than a standard football field, and include many amenities such as a 10-meter outdoor swimming pool, water bath, main deck dining area and cabins with panoramic ocean views.

What makes Solar Express different is that it is covered with nearly 1.500 m2 of solar cells. “Some typical superyacht features such as helipads and sunbathing areas will be removed to make way for solar panels. Solar Express is an effort towards a greener future for giant superyachts,” Glasson shared.

Solar cells cover the Solar Express almost from head to tail.

According to Glasson, amenities on the ship will be powered by solar cells. However, Solar Express does not run on pure electricity. It will be powered by hybrid propulsion, including twin Azipod thrusters and generators.

To improve efficiency, Solar Express uses ultra-light aluminum for the hull and in addition to luxurious, lightweight and transparent materials. The lighter weight allows the yacht to be more energy efficient, although the M51 has not released any speed or range figures.
