Grid management solution to optimize renewable energy sources

Grid management solution to optimize renewable energy sources

Vietnam needs to implement a group of solutions for planning and operating the power system to optimize the capacity of renewable energy sources, according to GIZ.

German Development Cooperation Organization GIZ coordinated with the Electricity Regulatory Authority - Ministry of Industry and Trade to organize an online seminar summarizing "Power grid management solutions to support optimal operation of renewable energy sources." in the power system". The event took place on August 26 in Hanoi.

At the conference, delegates watched the analysis of the power system and assessed the current status of power grid management in Vietnam. Besides, there are successful experiences in selected countries with similar characteristics to Vietnam such as the scale of installed capacity of the power system, the proportion of installed capacity of renewable energy sources, and the target Renewable energy development, GDP index...

The dispatching department operates the electricity system of Hanoi Electricity Corporation.

From the current situation and practical analysis, the international and domestic consulting group coordinated by GIZ has proposed two groups of specific solutions.

The first is a group of planning solutions. Of these, the most important thing is to promulgate a reasonable FIT price mechanism that changes according to region, time or load demand to limit renewable energy investment that is too concentrated in only a few certain regions. In addition, investors can be encouraged to equip energy storage systems, encourage automation solutions, digitalize the power grid, upgrade and expand the transmission capacity of the current power grid.

The second is the group of solutions on power system operation. This group is divided into three main solutions. Firstly, the long-term solution - investing in an ultra-high voltage DC power transmission grid. Solutions that can be applied in the short and medium term include applying advanced software to support changing the grid wiring structure, investing in phase shifting transformers, and under-load voltage regulation devices. to optimize power flow in the power system.

Second, solutions to the electricity market. Accordingly, new business models should be allowed to participate in the electricity market, such as energy storage systems or virtual power plant models. At the same time, deploy load demand management programs, adjust electricity loads, apply redispatching solutions with the participation of distributed renewable energy sources with small capacity and scale. Inter-regional convection power exchange for optimal operation of renewable energy sources.

Third, the solution to control the renewable energy source transmitted to the power grid. Limiting the generation capacity of renewable energy sources should be implemented after the problem of congestion persists despite all other previous measures, based on a comparison of levelized costs. Investors will be considered to compensate for lost revenue to a certain extent.

Vietnam aims to modernize the high-voltage power grid

According to Mr. Markus Bissel - Director of the Smart Grid for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SGREEE) Project, GIZ - the solutions will contribute to helping Vietnam make the most of available renewable energy sources. Great potential, effective and optimal use of grid infrastructure to maximize absorption of clean energy sources. Thereby, limiting the generation capacity of renewable energy sources. Therefore, Vietnam can both promote the development of renewable energy sources and ensure a reliable and stable electricity supply, aiming for sustainable energy development.

According to information sent to the press by GIZ, in recent years, renewable energy power projects have developed rapidly in Vietnam after the Government issued mechanisms to encourage the development of renewable energy, such as solar energy. sky and wind energy. However, most of these projects are concentrated in a few areas with great potential for solar and wind radiation while the grid infrastructure to relieve power capacity is not enough to respond synchronously. Along with that, the large difference between peak and off-peak load demands leads to instability of the power grid system, causing congestion in these areas. Projects must limit electricity generation, affecting revenue and wasting investment resources. The solutions proposed at the workshop will contribute to solving the above problems.

This workshop is within the framework of the bilateral technical cooperation project "Smart Grid for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency" (SGREEE), coordinated by the Vietnam Electricity Regulatory Authority and GIZ Organization. perform. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Attending the seminar were representatives of units under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Committee for Management of State Capital at Enterprises, units under Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), and experts from Electricity Associations. forces, Vietnam Energy, universities, non-governmental organizations and domestic and international experts and consultants.
