USAID and KOICA sign the first memorandum of understanding in Vietnam on climate change, environmental protection, and helping Vietnam promote the transition to clean energy.

On June 8.6, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Country Director Ann Marie Yastishock and Korea International Development Agency (KOICA) Country Director Cho Han Deog signed the first memorandum of understanding between the two agencies on cooperate to reduce pollution and climate change in the Mekong Delta and support Vietnam to promote the transition to clean energy.

“The United States is committed to working with global partners to jointly address the climate crisis. We are pleased to partner with KOICA to jointly realize our common goal with Vietnam towards an environmentally sustainable future” – said USAID Country Director Yastishock.

“Action for climate and the environment is considered central to KOICA's development cooperation activities. I believe that we will make efforts to save the planet more effectively through cooperation instead of acting individually" - said KOICA Country Director Cho Han Deog.

By implementing collaborative activities, USAID and KOICA intend to increase the impact and improve the effectiveness of the programs funded by the two agencies, while achieving better and more measurable results. for the people of Vietnam. 

The two sides will pursue common development goals including, but not limited to, reducing plastic waste and other types of pollution, improving solid waste management; promote biodiversity; reduce emissions in agriculture; strengthen adaptation strategies of vulnerable groups in the Mekong Delta; At the same time, promote the development and deployment of renewable energy at the central level and in urban areas.

USAID has a variety of initiatives focused on combating climate change, enhancing environmental security, and protecting the environment in Vietnam. Specifically, supporting the development of the clean energy sector, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting the natural environment including forests and threatened species, and mobilizing the participation of local communities for environmental issues environmental pollution, such as air pollution, waste management and water conservation. 

Since 2010, USAID has provided assistance to Vietnam's energy and environment sectors. USAID is currently implementing 11 environmental and energy projects in Vietnam with a total budget of more than 160 million USD.

KOICA is committed to combating climate change and promoting green growth. KOICA is currently in the process of increasing its portfolio of cooperation projects related to this field. In Vietnam, KOICA pays special attention to areas such as waste electricity, ocean plastic pollution, pollution monitoring, conservation and sustainable forest management. 

KOICA will endeavor to address these issues through cooperation with a variety of partners, including academia, startups and private enterprises as appropriate.
