Research on using electric buses for BRT line No. 1 in Ho Chi Minh City

On June 8, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport organized an in-depth seminar on electric bus plans for BRT line No. 6 under the Ho Chi Minh City green transportation development project.

At the conference, Mr. Tran Quang Lam, Director of the Department of Transport, said that according to the plan, the city will have 6 BRT lines with a total length of about 100km and BRT No. 1 is the first line to be deployed. In addition, the bus network currently has 126 routes with 2.100 buses in operation. By 2025, the city will expand its bus network to 260 routes, with 3.000 vehicles.

According to Mr. Lam, over the past 10 years, the city has developed buses using compressed natural gas (CNG), currently accounting for about 20% of the total number of vehicles in operation. The city also built a project to develop public transport from now to 2030, including the goal of sustainable and civilized development, with priority given to using clean energy vehicles and renewable energy. Therefore, choosing vehicles for the BRT route in particular as well as the city's buses in general in the near future is very necessary.

Ho Chi Minh City green transportation project funded by the World Bank (WB), builds the 1km long Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) main corridor No. 23. The corridor extends from An Lac (Binh Tan district) to Rach Chiec (Thu Duc city).

Based on the analysis and assessment of WB scientists and experts, the Department of Transport will advise the City People's Committee on choosing the type of vehicle for this project.

Mr. Shige Sakaki, transportation program coordination expert in Vietnam (WB), said that BRT project No. 1 initially planned to use CNG buses to operate on the route. However, currently, electric buses are a very viable option. Currently, cities around the world are also piloting or have put electric buses into use, some cities have electrified buses.
